Akayshia Logan is a self-taught artist who does any sort of art you can think of, and started as soon as they could hold a pencil. From digital art-which is by far the easiest to clean up after, to more traditional acrylic and watercolor painting, to upcycling old fabric and materials, to Pysanky eggs, to sculpture, to even aquarium aquascaping, they will do anything creative they can get their hands on.

One major subject of much of Akayshia’s work is animals. From the beginning, Akayshia has had a passion for animals. This led to many interesting pets (Not only the typical cats and dogs, but also hedgehogs, snails, and now even a couple of rescued axolotls.) over the years. Because of that passion, Akayshia found themselves in many animal related communities online relatively early on. Many people would use animal characters to represent themselves, and Akayshia’s art began to feature these people’s characters, and sometimes even their own. This is where Akayshia began to discover a niche in freelancing.

Akayshia has been accepted into multiple juried art shows over the years. A favorite of theirs was a piece titled “The Queen’s Jewel.” It was a necklace made from aluminum can tabs turned into a chain, with a plastic pendant made from a cheap chandelier crystal. It was a commentary on how much of jewelry, while it can be handcrafted and contain true value, is mostly priced at the levels it is because of marketing. That piece exemplifies a core theme in Akayshia’s work; just “what” is art and thus valuable, and what is not? Or, as most people think it, “One man’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Humanity produces a lot of waste, and we only have one planet. Sustainability and eco conscientiousness are an important thing to Akayshia. This likely evolved from learning about how animals are affected by their environment, and how humanity, for good and for bad and directly or indirectly, affects the animals and the environment.

Currently, they have found themselves with a focus on mushrooms. After taking a field mycology class in 2019, Akayshia fell in love with mushrooms (though not necessarily the flavor profile of any they tried.). To quote a popular meme, “I just think they’re neat.” Mushrooms therefore, have become a recurring subject in their work.
